Few months after establishing the Holy Cross of Davao College New Crusaders Futsal Men and Women teams, the institution’s footballers emerged as champions during the 1st Rigo Duterte Youth Football Festival last October 15, 2022 at the Azuela Cove, Davao City.
After five games of the 15 matches, the New Crusaders secured their top spots after scoring 3-1 and 3-0, respectively, in their final games.
HCDC Sports Coordinator Coach Melchor Anzures revealed that the awards resulted from their consistent training and regular technique polishing.
“Naa mi’y training gi-follow. Gina-check nako, gina-anticipate na nako ang dula. Magprepare na mi’g program na related sa game (The training is for the whole year. So every month, we follow a training program. Every month, I check and anticipate the game already. Two weeks before, we will prepare a program related to that game),” said Anzuras in an interview.
Anzures added that he was very proud of this new milestone brought by the New Crusaders, as they engaged in the Youth Football Festival that aims to revitalize the students’ sports-related skills.
Prince Louie Flores (Futsal Men) and Jessa Mar Arana (Futsal Women) were declared as Most Valuable Players (MVPs) after the 4-hour sporting event that commenced at around 2 in the afternoon.
“Siyempre, nalipay kay first tournament namo as a team sa Holy Cross [of Davao College]. First [time] sad namo nag-uban. Nalipay mi nga nakadaog mi (Of course, we are glad as it was our first tournament as a team for the Holy Cross [of Davao College]. It was also our first time to compete as a group. We are happy we won),” Arana said.
She asserted that their teamwork and hard work led them to earn their victory.
She added that Coach Anzuras and HCDC Sports Head Coach Pochollo Elegino’s mentorship guided their triumph in their respective events.
Anzures also stressed that the training is still ongoing as the teams are now set to clinch their spot for the upcoming Acosta Cup.
