To build more collaborations and improvements for National Service Training Program-Civilian Welfare Training Service (NSTP-CWTS) training, programs, and community engagement, the Holy Cross of Davao College and Philippine Coast Guard–Southeastern Mindanao signed the renewal of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) last Thursday, June 9.

The MoA between Coast Guard and HCDC relates to the implementation of the PCG-oriented NSTP-CWTS Program and it aims to establish the PCG as a significant uniformed armed service that actively encourages maritime safety and security, search and rescue, law enforcement, and environmental protection.

HCDC-NSTP has always been collaborating with the PCG for the implementation of the programs, such as the national coastal clean-up and mangrove planting.

“This MoA [Memorandum of Agreement] is an opportunity for us to develop our youth because we, the coastguard, believe in the importance of our youth. The most important resource of our nation, especially in national development. Looking forward to closer collaboration and cooperation in the future with HCDC,” Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao Commander CG Commodore Agapito B. Bibat said.

The agreement is also an enactment of NSTP Act of 2001 or the Republic Act 9163 which mandates all Filipino citizens both male and female to fulfill civil obligation, to render service to the country and the people.

HCDC Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Teresa Fabiania is also thankful for the collaboration.

We look forward to the many possibilities of collaboration and engagements to allow the coast guard and NSTP of HCDC for learning and giving knowledge to our NSTP students. I’m excited because this is a sort of comeback of our coast guard to be part of the HCDC community,” she said.

Currently, the HCDC-NSTP students have been monitoring the planted mangrove trees in Barangay Tambo, Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) as part of the community needs assessment to be used in a project proposal.

The first few sighted programs between HCDC and PCG will be environmental programs, training safety and life at sea. (Jhunryl B. Orit)
