Instructors from the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Communication (HUSOCOM) and the College of Hospitality and Tourism and Management Education (CHaTME) of the Holy Cross of Davao College congregated for a 2-day research writeshop and proposal on June 13-14, 2024 held in the 6th floor Social Work Laboratory and Psychology Research Laboratory.

Spearheaded by HUSOCOM, the event aimed to enhance research skills, write comprehensive ethics in research, and eventually have the proposal paper defended and earn a grant from the institution. Facilitated by research specialists and evaluated by distinguished panels, the writeshop showcased various research projects from 22 instructors and administrators that vowed to contribute significantly to their respective specializations.

Guided by the panel comprising Dr. Marleonie M. Bauyot, Dr. Alona S. Galache, Mr. Kevin Paul C. Bonotan, and Mr. Marbhen Dominique O. Abendaño (facilitator), several groups in the worked and presented their exceptional research proposals in the Social Work Laboratory. Ms. Mia Bernielle B. Dela Cerna, Mr. Julius Cesar N. Deloy, and Mr. Mark Kinlee E. Ocay focused on integrating peace education across various disciplines. Mr. Jayson B. De Los Santos, Ms. Mae-Ann T. Gasing, and Engr. Arnell F. Mesina aimed to address the health and hygiene practices among riverbank settlers in Davao City. Other notable proposals included explorations into organizational communication practices by Mr. Jacques Axid A. Roselo, Mr. Paul Martin Y. Acol, and Ms. Katrina Angela C. Posadas, and a city-wide study on cardiovascular healthy lifestyle behaviors among young adults by Mr. Abendaño and Ms. Vanezza F. Aba-a.

Dr. Bauyot, a distinguished professor from Ateneo de Davao University, stressed the importance of college instructors to continuously engage in impactful research rather than merely meeting minimum requirements. He applauded the research papers proposed at the Social Work Laboratory, wherein he served as the chair of the technical panel of examiners for their timeliness and social relevance, expressing his anticipation for the significant outcomes these studies will yield.

Simultaneously, in the Psychology Research Laboratory, the panel of examiners Dr. Estela Yray, Dr. Susan S. Cruz, and Dr. Bangeles (facilitator) oversaw research endeavors focusing on diverse psychological and educational themes. Among the highlights were a graduate tracer study of CHaTME by Ms. Cindy Jaromay, Mr. Denzen Louriz Palanas, and Mr. Dan Daryl Taporoc, an examination of academic engagement among college students by Ms. Dolly Joy Ronquillo and Ms. Kharis Anne Taghoy, influence of conviction in pedagogy by Mr. Jholy Nobabos, Ms. Romelyn Luzon, and Mr. Ritchie Sermon, and lastly, effectiveness of psychology formation programs by Dr. Jerson John Trocio and Mr. Elton Edward Baranaskas.

Mr. Bonotan, the Center for Research coordinator, stated, “Holy Cross of Davao College is truly committed to supporting the faculty in conducting basic and applied research projects. The administration is ready to provide resources, mentorship, and collaborative opportunities to foster academic excellence and innovation.”

The research topics presented at the 2-day research writeshop event encompassed diverse themes: peace education integration, health and hygiene, organizational communication, graduate tracking, education, and well-being. These studies underscore the pledge of the faculty to address critical educational, health, and social issues through academic research, and they are also committed to having their studies published and presented by joining research forums.
