REBIRTH
Alumni Office Blessing

January 31, 2004 marked the blessing of the Alumni Office. Fr. Pepe Retorca, DCD, then School Chaplain officiated the blessing attended by the alumni Board of Directors together with school officials and other guests.

House at the second floor of the Thibault Hall, the Alumni Office, though not so spacious is somehow functional. It is a dream come true. Among the

Fr. Pepe Retorca
possessions treasured by the association through the years are some office fixtures, the latest of which is a complete computer set bequeathed by the past officers of the College Alumni Association to the new association, the HCDC-Alumni Association, Inc., which is a merger of all departments-Grade School, High School, TVET (Technical Vocational Education & Training), College and Graduate School. With its growing population, the association dreams of having a more spacious and accessible office. Or, perhaps, not just an office but a building it can call its very own.
Who knows?

ALUMNI OFFICERS INDUCTED

Last September 13, 2004, the school initiated the holding of the Alumni Night purposely to reactive the association as it believes in the latter's capacity to be a partner to the institution's growth and development.

On that occassion, officers of the different departments were elected. After which, the respective presidents and the vice-presidents elected from among

themselves the officers of the association were the following:President-Dr. Raymundo Pendor (Graduate School); Vice-President Balmis Diao, Jr. (High School); Secretary Angelito Briones (College); Treasurer Marivette Martinez- Echavez (Grade School); Business Manager Alvin Ligan (College);Board of Directors -Boy Mañacap (High School). Edward Macapili (College), May Divino (Grade School), and Ma. Cristina Abrogar (High School). Lourdes Ramos-Lucero facilitated the election.

After the election, the newly elected officers of the different departments as well as the officers of the association were inducted into the office by no less than the president Dr. Ma. Iris Melliza. With its new sets of officers, the association comprising all the departments experienced a kind of rebirth. Those present could only hope that those inducted would really live up to what they have pledged for-to keep the association ever alive and responsive.
Kudos to all those inducted, especially those who have kept their pledge to heart!

CBL RATIFIED

The HCDC-Alumni Association, Inc. marked a milestone when formulated its Constitution and By-Laws. Despite the odds, Dr. Raymundo Pendor, the alumni president, together with the other officers pushed through with its ratification so that the association can start moving/working legally. With the presence of more than a hundred members, most of whom were understandably employees of the school, the new CBL was finally ratified at the HCDC AUDIO-VISUAL Room last October 14, 2003. Also present before the actual ratification was Dr. Ma. Iris A. Melliza, the school president who gave an inspirational message.

18 BOARD MEETINGS HELD

So far, since their election, the Board of Directors has held at least 18 board meetings. Though a quorum seemed to be an elusive reality every time a board meeting is called, the Board of Directors under the leadership of Dr. Raymundo Pendor has not lost hope in making waves for the association.

Congratulations to those board members and the other department/program officers who
have kept the alumni spirit burning. Keep up the goodwork. May your tribe increase!

WEATHERS THROUGH THE TEST OF TIMES
From the humble beginnings, the HOLY CROSS OF DAVAO COLLEGE has grown significantly in more ways than one. Founded in 1954 by the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM) as a school for boys and girls, it was then named Holy Cross Academy.

Two years later (1956) when the PME Fathers took over the administration, it became the Holy Cross of Davao School. The priest took special attention in teaching those who have less in life.

As expected by its founders, the school grew to become a college in 1966, thus, becoming the Holy Cross of Davao College. A turn over of administration took in 1978 which cut off the school's umbilical cord from her founders. The PME Fathers passed on the apostolate of education to the Archdiocese of Davao.

The late Most Reverend Archbishop of Davao,Msgr. Antonio Mabutas appointed Mr. Emilio Palma Gil to head the school which posed as call of challenge to his administrative skills.

Mr. Palma Gil also extended network to international friend, the world reknown philanthropist, the late Prof. Herman Gmeiner. In fact in honor of its benefactor, the elementary department has been renamed Prof. Herman Gmeneir School in 1984.

The High School department continued to be an exclusive school for boys but due to the persistent request of parents whose daughters were not allowed to enroll, it became a "coed", admitting both male and female high school students effective schoolyear 1985-1986.

On September 14, 1994, Ma. Iris A. Melliza, Ed.D. was installed as the second president of HCDC,thereby breaking new grounds
for the institution.
To fare well with the standards of quality education, HCDC is a accreditation by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Colleges and Schools (PAASCU). To date, PAASCU has granted a Level 3 accreditation to the Liberal Arts, Education and Commerce
Programs. The Maritime Education program on the other hand has been recently granted Level 1 accreditation by the PACUCOA.

The inevitable increase of enrollment population also meant the expansion of the college's programs, the following courses are being offered according to the year of government recognition.

Liberal Arts, Secondary Education, Commerce, 1969; Elementary Education, Customs Administration , 1985. Accountancy,1992; Maritime Education, 1998; Psychology, 1999; Library and Information Science, 2000; Technical & Vocational courses, 2001;
Computer Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Social Work, 2003. Effective next schoolyear, 2005-2006, the college is set to open BS in Criminology.

Graduate courses opened in 1994 offering MA in Education MS in Commerce and MS in Management are being applied for.

For 53 years now of educational existence, Holy Cross of Davao College has remained firm and staunch despite some uncertainties. It really did well in the past, weathered through the test of times into becoming a landmark quality education not only in Mindanao
but in the entire country as well. (with facts from HCDC Faculty Manual)
